The band SUPER MUSIC TEAM began as a spontaneous pairing of myself and subsequently good friend, Chinese immigrant artist and musician Ultraman.
Immediately following his additions of beautiful basslines and backing vocals to my solo guitar and vocal live performances, we were surrounded by an ever-evolving international cast of talented vagrants, including from Germany, Latvia, Belgium, France, Japan, Brazil, England and even a couple of token New Zealander's. Each added their own unique energy to our growing super-hero collective and together – more than once – we brought the house down.
At this time, I also undertook a strange personal journey, a rite of passage perhaps. Unusually, I decided to live for several months in a budget inner-city hostel among a curious mix of both Auckland's homeless, and their predominantly-Japanese traveller roommates.
The ongoing riotous yet harmonious blending of fundamentally-incongruous perspectives: culturally, musically, economically and personally, gave me more than I can explain. I made this film, and wrote the song, with respect to the value our differences bring when we seek consciously to bridge them.
It's not always easy or comfortable to explore such divides, but when it's possible, we must.
